RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
