Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
